MDM Server FTP Services
File Transfer Protocol
- FTP
- A server-based system used to transfer files over the internet. In an FTP layout, there is a server that holds all of the files, and many clients, connected to the server, that have access to these files. With FTP you can move files from your computer to the server, or from the server to your computer. This is explained in the how-to for using FileZilla. If you prefer some other FTP client, any non-SSH client will work, although not supported directly by this service (I cannot help you with any problems you may have with the client software, and the how-to will not be accurate for your software.
This service allows any FTP client to connect to my server's file structure.
Note: For security reasons, you must have a username and password to access most of the file structure. Although there is an anonymous directory, it has very little capability.
The supported client software for this service is FileZilla (Click for how-to install). Please read the section on FileZilla for how to use it.
FTP Directory Listing
Below, is an extensive list of the directories you can view/edit on my server. Some are read-only (You can NOT edit or delete files within), and some are R/W (You may edit the files as you wish). Some have specific permissions, listed in the description of the directory. Directories in red pertain to you.
bullet
- /data/home/username
- This folder is your personal dedicated directory for your files only. No other user can view, edit, or use these files unless you give the correct permissions (advanced). When you log on to the FTP server, you will be automatically placed here. This directory is R/W (To you ONLY).
- /data/home/username/www
- This folder is your personal website. More on this under Apache. This folder, regardless to the permissions set for /data/home/username, is readable and executable by everyone. Without these settings, your web site cannot be viewed. This directory is R/W (To you ONLY) and Read-only to world.
- /data/home
- This is the root home directory. Everyone's personal files are kept here. The only folder you have access to in this directory is your own, specified by your username. This directory is Denied, unless it is your directory. This is backed up with RaidProtection and BackupProtection.
- /data
- This is the root directory for public accessed files. This directory implements the RAID-0+1 Backup system for assurance against data loss (see RaidProtection). There are no shared files outside of this directory. Stay inside this directory during your FTP sessions. This directory is Read-Only.
- /av/ftp
- This directory is for anonymous users and guests for FTP access. Only files 100% public should go here. This is NOT backed up!
- /data/Shares/rwshares
- This directory is a temporary solution for sharing folders with other users. Only users with accounts on the server have access to these files. Users with accounts can delete, modify, overwrite, append, and read all data in this directory unless specified otherwise! This directory is R/W to all users. This is backed up with RaidProtection.
- /data/Shares/shared
- This directory holds read-only shared files that only users may view. The subdirectories are listed below: (ALL DIRECTORIES HERE ARE Read-Only) This is backed up with RaidProtection.
- /data/Shares/shared/Media/Music
- A vast library of MP3 music files. Subdirectories categorize music by author's name. This is backed up with RaidProtection.
- /data/Shares/shared/Media/Video
- This directory is filled with some short music videos, comedy videos, etc. This is backed up with RaidProtection.
