SquirrelMail

(E-Mail Client Website on mdmsolutions.org)

IMAP & SMTP

Note: This information may be old, and is not formatted properly yet. The client has gone past multiple revisions since this was written, and it has been ripped from another section of my website to here.

E-Mail Client Website: This full-scale website E-Mail client is fairly advanced, with many features. It includes an Address book, folders to sort e-mail, and spam filters (controlled by me, more news on this later).

Follow these steps to begin using SquirrelMail. Once you are done you should be able to successfully receive and send e-mails from anywhere.

If you ever need help on something, click the help button at the top of the page. It will show you information on what you are doing currently. Otherwise, look on this page.

  1. Begin by logging in on the login screen with your username and password.
  2. You will enter the main interface, with the default folder showing (INBOX). Notice the following features:

    1. Folders list to the left. This list shows all of your folders. The default list includes the following:

      1. INBOX - This is where the new e-mail messages that you get go by default.
      2. .INBOX.Drafts - This, discussed later, is for saving messages that you are still writing so you can resume writing them at a later time.
      3. .INBOX.Sent - After sending an e-mail, you will have a receipt of that message in this folder.
      4. .INBOX.Trash - After deleting a message, it will be placed here, such as a recycle-bin. NOTE: To actually delete the files, you must also erase them from this folder!
    2. MOTD (Message Of The Day) - At the top of the page is a short message letting you know the latest news from the server, a welcome message.
    3. Commands for the current folder at the top of the list of contents in the folder.

      1. Toggle All - Selects all messages shown for manipulation. Discussed below.
      2. Move Selected To - Clicking Move after selecting a folder moves the selected message(s) to the selected folder.
      3. Delete - Moves the selected message(s) to the Trash folder.
      4. Transform as Read/Unread - Respectively Unbolds/Bolds the selected message(s).
      5. From, Date, Subject (Grey buttons next to them) - Sorts the messages in the current folder by from, date, or subject. Click once to sort ascending, twice for descending.
      6. Each message has its own commands. Directly before the message is the selection box, to select it (for deleting, moving, etc.). The subject of the message, when clicked, directs you to the actual message (to read it, forward it, etc.).
    4. Reading Mail (Click on the subject line of any message to read it.)

      1. At the top of the message, you can see these links:

        1. Message List - Returns to list of messages.
        2. Delete - Deletes the current message being read.
        3. Previous/Next - Go to the previous or next message, respectively, in the message list of that folder.
        4. Forward - Forwards the current mail being read to another address.
        5. Reply - Replies the current mail being read to the sender.
        6. Reply All - Replies to all messages in the mail box.
        7. View Full Header - Reads advanced information about the current message.
        8. View Printable Version - Opens a new window with the message in it, that includes a print button at the top to be able to print it easily and cleanly with no other frames on the page.
      2. At the bottom of the message, you can see these links:

        1. Download this as a file - Allows you to save the e-mail to a text document on your computer.
        2. If there were attachments sent in this message, the list will be here.
  3. To open the file, click the file name itself. To download the file, click the download button to the right of it.

    4.

If you look at the line at the top, you will see 8 buttons. Compose, Addresses, Folders, Options, Search, Help, Sign Out, and SquirrelMail.

    1.

Compose - This button brings up a page for you to write an e-mail.

    1.

When composing, you will be given the normal options you get with any e-mail program.

    2.

To, CC, BCC, Subject, Send, and the Body area are self explanatory if you've ever used e-mail before.

    3.

Priority can be set for more important / less important e-mails. Some clients prioritize the incoming e-mail this way.

    4.

You can get a receipt if you'd like for when they read it, and/or when you deliver it. Just select the appropriate box.

    5.

Signature - This adds the signature you've written in the Options section (not done yet, read on).

    6.

Addresses - Allows you to add e-mail addresses from your address book in SquirrelMail (not done yet, read on).

    7.

Save Draft - Saves the current message to .INBOX.Drafts instead of sending it. Resume writing the message anytime later by opening the Drafts folder.

    8.

Attach, Browse, Add, Delete selected attachments - Allows you to add an attachment to your message. Make sure to click Add to add it to your attach queue.

    2.

Address - Edit your Address book in SquirrelMail.

    1.

Your first time using the address system, you will only be given the option to add a record. Simply type in the information you want, and click Add Address (Nickname can be anything you want to identify the person by, as long as it differs from all other records).

    2.

Once you have added an address, you can see your personal address book. To edit or delete a record, select its check box to the left of the record, and click the appropriate button. To e-mail someone in the list of records, click on their e-mail address.
